When Emperor Komei dies shortly after Yoshinobu officially becomes shogun, the political climate intensifies and assassination is suspected. Devious Councillor Ito seeks to further divide the Shinsengumi into factions, and sends Captain Hijikata on an ill-fated mission to Satsuma.
